Eventing functions
- A programmable countdown with audible signals starting at 30 seconds, becoming increasingly prominent during the last 15 seconds until zero. The watch then resumes counting up. A beep also sounds at each full minute remaining.
- If the countdown is set to 1 minute or less, no alarm sounds before the last 3 seconds. The watch then counts up from zero, with one beep per minute. This function allows you to start the watch without having to worry about it while you get your horse into the starting box.
- A count-up from zero with a beep every minute, and a programmable count-up to the optimum time for the cross-country phase: beeps every minute, then, during the last 30 seconds of the optimum time, beeps at 30 seconds and then at 15, 14, 13… seconds before the optimum time.
- All audible beeps can be accompanied by vibration for increased awareness.

Set the time and date
- Put the watch in clock mode by pressing MODE. This mode is identified by the two dots flashing between the hours and minutes, and by the AM or PM indicator on the screen.
- Hold CLEAR down for about 2 seconds, until the seconds flash. The screen displays the word “Second”.
- Press MIN to reset the seconds to 00. The seconds then start counting again.
- Once the seconds are set, press MODE: the seconds are confirmed and the minutes flash. The screen displays the word “Minute”.
- Set the minutes with MIN:
- each press advances the clock by one minute;
- by holding the button down for a few seconds, the minutes advance quickly.
- Once the minutes are set, press MODE: the minutes are confirmed and the hours flash. The screen displays the word “Hour”. Set the hours with MIN in the same way.
- Once the time is set, confirm with MODE: the year flashes and the screen displays the word “Year”. Set the year with MIN.
- Press MODE to confirm the year: the month flashes and the screen displays the word “Month”. Set the month with MIN.
- Press MODE to confirm the month: the date flashes and the screen displays the word “Date”.
- Set the date with MIN and confirm with MODE.
- The screen displays the word “Format” and 24HR or 12HR flashes. Choose the 12-hour or 24-hour format with MIN.
- Press MODE to confirm the format and return to setting the seconds. You can then go through all the settings again.
- Once all the settings are correct, press CLEAR: the time setting is confirmed.
Switch from the time to the timer
- Press MODE: the watch switches from the time (TIME) to the timer (TIMER), in COUNTDOWN & UP mode (countdown followed by stopwatch timing). The screen displays TMR with the down arrow AND the up arrow.
- Press MODE again to switch to the COUNTUP stopwatch: the display shows TMR with the up arrow ONLY.
- Press MODE again to return to the time of day: the display shows the word TIME for 5 seconds, then the day of the week.
- You can switch from one function to the other with MODE, whether the timer is running or not.
- In timer mode, there are 2 options: COUNTDOWN or COUNTUP. As soon as you program one, the other is no longer available: if you program a countdown time, you cannot program a count-up timer, and vice versa.
Turning off the beep and vibration
Turning off the beep
If you prefer to use the watch solely as a visual reference, you can turn off the beep:
- Hold down MODE for approximately 2 seconds.
- A brief beep confirms the operation, and the bell icon at the top right of the display disappears: the beep is turned off.
- To restore the beep, hold down MODE until you hear the beep and see the bell icon reappear.
Stopping the vibration
You can also stop the vibration. This can only be done in time-of-day mode.
- Hold down SEC for approximately 2 seconds.
- A brief beep confirms the operation, and the vibration icon on the right of the display disappears.
- To restore it, hold down SEC until you hear the beep and see the icon reappear.
Countdown mode (COUNTDOWN & UP)
Timing from zero (in COUNTDOWN & UP mode)
- From clock mode (CLOCK), press MODE to access the first timer option. If the timer is stopped and reset to 00:00, the display shows TMR with both the down arrow AND the up arrow. If the timer is running, first press STOP, then CLEAR. The display then shows 00:00.
- Press START/STOP: the timer counts up from zero, in minutes and seconds, up to a maximum of 59 minutes 59 seconds. The display shows TMR with the up arrow only.
- During timing, you can stop and restart the timer as often as necessary (for example, if you are stopped on the course).
- A beep sounds every minute: a short beep at seconds 57, 58 and 59, followed by a longer beep at second 00 of the full minute.
- The small numbers at the bottom show 0:00, indicating that the timer was initially at zero.
Programmed countdown
- Press MODE to access COUNTDOWN & UP mode. The timer must be stopped and at zero: the display shows 00:00 and TMR with both the down arrow AND the up arrow.
- Set the minutes with MIN and the seconds with SEC. The display shows the programmed time, which will generally be the optimum time for your cross-country course.
- The small numbers at the bottom also show the programmed time (the optimum time).
- Press START/STOP: the timer counts down in minutes and seconds to zero. The display shows TMR with the down arrow only. The small numbers at the bottom do not count down: they remain at the programmed time.
- During the countdown, a beep sounds at each full minute remaining. A short beep sounds at seconds 03, 02 and 01, followed by a longer beep at second 00.
- You can stop and restart the timer as often as necessary during the countdown (for example, if you are stopped on the course).
- During the last 30 seconds of the programmed period, additional warning beeps sound: one long beep at second 30, then short beeps at 15, 14, 13, 12… seconds, up to one long beep at zero (end of the optimum time).
- At zero, the timer starts counting up. The display shows TMR with the up arrow only.
- During the last 59 seconds of the countdown, the digits are displayed in a very large format.
- If you set a countdown of less than one minute, there are no beeps at 30 seconds or at 15, 14, 13…: the only beeps are at 3, 2, 1, 0. To test all the beeps, use a period of more than 59 seconds.
- The watch beeps during the last 30 seconds. If these beeps coincide with a minute beep, the minute beep does not sound: the last-30-second beeps take priority.
Stopwatch mode (COUNTUP)
Timing from zero (in COUNTUP mode)
- From clock mode (CLOCK), press MODE once to access the first timer option. If the timer is stopped and reset to 00:00, the display shows TMR with both the down arrow AND the up arrow. If the timer is running, first press STOP, then CLEAR; the display then shows 00:00. Next, press MODE again: the display shows TMR with the up arrow only. The small numbers at the bottom always show 0:00, that is, the programmed time.
- Press START/STOP: the timer counts up from zero in minutes and seconds, up to a maximum of 59 minutes 59 seconds.
- During timing, you can stop and restart the timer as often as necessary.
- A beep sounds every minute: a short beep at seconds 57, 58 and 59, followed by a longer beep at second 00 of the full minute.
Programmed timing
- From the time display, press MODE twice to access COUNTUP mode. The timer must be stopped and at zero: the display shows 00:00 and TMR with only the upward arrow.
- Set the minutes with MIN and the seconds with SEC. The display shows the programmed time, which will generally be the optimum time for your cross-country round. It remains displayed until you press START/STOP. The small numbers at the bottom also show the programmed time.
- Press START/STOP: the timer counts in minutes and seconds from zero. The display shows TMR with only the upward arrow.
- While timing, a beep sounds at each elapsed minute: a short beep at seconds 57, 58 and 59, followed by a longer beep at second 00.
- You can stop and restart the timer as many times as necessary. The small numbers at the bottom always show the programmed time.
- During the last 30 seconds of the programmed period, additional warning beeps sound: one long beep at 30 seconds, then short beeps at 15, 14, 13, 12… seconds, followed by a long beep at the programmed time (the end of the optimum time).
- Once the programmed time is reached, the timer continues counting. The display still shows TMR with only the upward arrow.
Tips for eventing
- Turning off the beeps: you can turn off the alarm beeps at any time by holding down MODE for 2 seconds. A beep confirms that the sound has been enabled or disabled, and the bell icon is displayed when sound is enabled.
-
At the finish: if you stop the timer as you cross the finish line, the display shows a number of seconds (and possibly minutes).
- If the final beep has not sounded (in countdown mode, COUNTDOWN is still displayed), you can calculate how many seconds (and possibly minutes) you are under the optimum time.
- If the final beep has sounded (in countdown mode, the display then shows COUNTUP), you can calculate how many seconds (and possibly minutes) you are over the optimum time.
If you use the countdown
- If you prefer the countdown to the stopwatch but want to start your watch before the starter says “Go”, ask them to let you know approximately 30 seconds before the start. Set your watch to the optimum time PLUS 30 seconds. Start the watch when the starter announces “30 seconds”, then use the remaining time to get your horse into the starting box while making sure the watch is running. This is very useful for horses that do not like entering the starting box.
- If you have the same problem getting your horse into the starting box but prefer to time from zero (with beeps every minute), you can use a countdown of less than one minute WITHOUT the countdown alarms. Ask the starter to let you know when 30 seconds remain and set a 30-second countdown: the timer beeps at 3, 2, 1, 0 and then starts counting. You therefore do not need to start the watch while getting your horse into the starting box. The minute beeps are automatic during timing.
If you use programmed timing
- To have the alarms during the last 30 seconds, you must start the watch when the starter says “5, 4, 3, 2, 1, Go”. In this mode, it is not possible to add 30 seconds to the optimum time.
- If you have difficulty getting your horse into the starting box, the 30-second countdown method described above (beeps at 3, 2, 1, 0 followed by automatic timing with beeps every minute) also applies.
Wearing the watch
- The watch is worn on the wrist like a conventional watch. Its elastic strap also allows it to be worn over clothing. If the screen is difficult to read this way, the entire timer body can be rotated in its outer clip for a better viewing angle.
- If you prefer to wear the watch on the back of your hand, remove the timer from the outer clip and remove the elastic strap from the clip. The outer clip can then be sewn onto a glove using the 2 holes already present in the clip. Then put the timer back into the clip at the angle that suits you.
Recharge the battery
The battery is a lithium-ion battery. It is recharged using the USB charging clip supplied with the watch.
- Remove the watch body from the outer black clip through which the strap passes. If it is tight, it is easier to remove the strap first.
- Plug the charger into a power source: a mains adapter with a USB port (such as a phone charger) or a computer with a USB port.
- Then attach the charging clip to the watch by placing the 2 pins in the holes on the back of the case, so that the metal contacts complete the circuit.
- The battery starts charging: the battery icon indicates this with bars scrolling inside it. If this is not the case, clean the contacts on the charging clip AND especially those on the back of the case.
- When charging is complete, the bars stop scrolling and remain steady.
- You can then remove the clip.
- The battery icon disappears and reappears only when the battery is low and charging is recommended.
- Make sure to put the watch case back in the black clip, securing it properly. Optimum Time accepts no responsibility for user error at this stage.
- Battery life depends mainly on use of the timer and the beep and vibration functions; the vibration motor consumes the most power. According to the manufacturer's tests, the battery lasts for at least 700 race-start sequences (regatta). The watch uses very little power when the timer is not in use.
- Charging takes approximately 2 hours.
- We advise against charging the watch more than necessary, even though this should not damage it: this requires removing the watch from its clip unnecessarily. MAKE SURE to reattach it properly to the black clip.
Adjusting the elastic strap
There is a right and wrong way to adjust the elastic strap: follow the method below to prevent it from coming undone.
- Place the watch on your wrist and pass the elastic through the loop, from bottom to top.
- Pull the elastic to the desired tightness and secure it by firmly closing the loop.
- Slide the elastic keeper over the excess elastic to tuck away the loose end.
Incorrect method: the end of the elastic hangs freely outside the loop. Correct method: the elastic comes out through the top of the loop and its end is held by the keeper.
Reset the watch
Electronic devices sometimes need to be restarted. It is not always possible to know why, but whether it is a computer, a phone or this watch, it is not a sign of a fault. Restarting restarts the processor and allows the watch to return to normal operation.
- Press and hold START/STOP AND CLEAR together for 5 seconds.
- All screen segments and icons light up.
- Then release the buttons: the watch has been reset.
