✨ Key features
- ✔ Sweet Iron is a mild steel that is blued during manufacture by heating. When exposed to humid air and saliva, it develops a surface oxidation with a sweet taste that naturally stimulates salivation: the horse chews more and accepts the bit better.
- ✔ A single joint. This mouthpiece puts less pressure on the tongue than a double-jointed one and works mainly on the bars and sides of the tongue. This is the standard mouthpiece.
- ✔ Leverage cheekpiece: the lower the rein is attached, the stronger the action. The point of pressure is on the poll, just behind the ears.

This is the mouthpiece most horses are familiar with: the one you start with, and return to when you want to determine what comes from the bit and what comes from the hand.
🧴 Usage advice
⚠️ Bit size is given in millimetres: it is the width of the mouthpiece from one ring to the other. A 125 measures 12.5 cm. Measure your horse's mouth with a gauge, or use the measurement of the bit it wears: if it is too wide, the bit moves around and pinches; if it is too narrow, it presses on the corners of the mouth. ⚠️ The three-ring bit amplifies the action of the hand. Start with the highest ring. ⚠️ The blue colour turns silver-grey or brown-grey with use, and an orange film appears when the bit remains unused: this is normal Sweet Iron behaviour, not a defect. A wipe with a damp cloth is enough to remove it. This oxidation is not harmful.
