A three-ring (Pessoa) bit made of blue-finished sweet iron, with a double-jointed mouthpiece and elliptical link.
✨ Key features
- ✔ Sweet Iron is a mild steel that is blued during manufacturing by heating. When exposed to humid air and saliva, it develops a surface oxidation with a sweet taste that naturally stimulates salivation: the horse chews more and accepts the bit more readily.
- ✔ Double-jointed mouthpiece with a central elliptical link. This shape better follows the anatomy of the mouth and allows the bit to sit more freely, but it applies slightly more pressure to the center of the tongue than a single-jointed mouthpiece.
- ✔ Leverage cheekpiece: the lower the rein is attached, the stronger the action. The point of pressure is on the poll, just behind the ears.
📋 Technical specifications
- Type: three-ring bit (Pessoa)
- Material: Sweet Iron
- Mouthpiece: double-jointed with elliptical link
- Mouthpiece thickness: 16 mm
- Sizes (mm): 115 / 125 / 135 / 145
🐎 Why choose this product?
The elliptical link eliminates the pinching effect of a single joint without the firmness of a flat plate: this is the most forgiving type of double-jointed mouthpiece.
🧴 Usage advice
⚠️ Bit size is given in millimetres: this is the width of the mouthpiece from one ring to the other. A 125 measures 12.5 cm. Measure your horse's mouth with a bit ruler, or measure the bit it currently wears: if it is too wide, the bit moves around and pinches; if it is too narrow, it tightens the corners of the mouth. ⚠️ A three-ring bit increases the leverage of the rider's hand. Start with the highest ring. ⚠️ The blue colour turns silver-grey or brown-grey with use, and an orange film appears when the bit is left unused: this is normal Sweet Iron behaviour, not a defect. A wipe with a damp cloth is enough to remove it. This oxidation is not harmful.
