The answer to saddles that slip forward. On a horse with a low wither, a rounded croup, or a barrel-shaped ribcage — typically ponies and Iberian horses — the saddle slides forward and eventually presses on the withers.
The crupper stops this slipping by resting beneath the tail. This one is made of buffalo leather, which is denser and more durable than ordinary cowhide — an important advantage for a piece that is constantly under tension. It adjusts at three points: two buckles at the tail and one at the back, allowing the tension to be adjusted precisely — firm enough to hold the saddle, yet flexible enough not to rub beneath the tail.

🧴 Care and use advice
Adjust the tension so that one hand can fit freely between the crupper and the croup. If it is too tight, it will irritate the delicate skin beneath the tail; if it is too loose, it will not hold the saddle in place. Introduce the horse to it gradually: many horses tense up the first time it is fitted.
