A blue-patinated mild steel loose ring snaffle with a single-jointed mouthpiece.

✨ Key features

  • ✔ Sweet Iron is mild steel that is blued during manufacturing by heating. When exposed to humid air and saliva, it develops a surface oxidation with a sweet taste that naturally stimulates salivation: the horse chews more and accepts the bit better.
  • ✔ A single joint. This mouthpiece puts less pressure on the tongue than a double-jointed one and works mainly on the bars and sides of the tongue. It is the standard mouthpiece.
  • ✔ The rings do not slide: the bit stays in a stable position in the mouth and the rein aids are transmitted more directly. The loose rings do not pinch the lips, so bit guards are unnecessary.

🐎 Why choose this product?

This is the mouthpiece most horses are familiar with: the one to start with, and the one to return to when you want to determine what comes from the bit and what comes from the rider's hand.

🧴 Usage advice

⚠️ Bit size is given in millimetres: it is the width of the mouthpiece from one ring to the other. A 125 measures 12.5 cm. Measure your horse's mouth with a bit measuring tool, or use the measurement of the bit it wears: if it is too wide, the bit moves around and pinches; if it is too narrow, it tightens the corners of the mouth. Choose the thickness according to the mouth: a thick mouthpiece distributes pressure over a larger surface area, but takes up too much space in a shallow mouth or with a thick tongue. ⚠️ The blue colour turns silver-grey or brown-grey with use, and an orange film appears when the bit is left unused: this is normal Sweet Iron behaviour, not a defect. A wipe with a damp cloth is enough to remove it. This oxidation is not harmful.

About TRUST Equestrian ...

TRUST Equestrian is a Dutch brand specializing in bits and leatherwork. Its bits are designed, developed, and manufactured in the Netherlands, where a team of technicians assembles them by hand. Production of Sweet Iron mouthpieces began more than fifteen years ago, followed by Leather and then Inno Sense mouthpieces. The range now includes three materials, twenty-two mouthpieces, and thirty-four types of shanks, totaling more than two thousand different bits. TRUST bits are anatomically shaped: slightly curved, they follow the shape of the horse’s mouth. The leather collection is made from European full-grain leather, and each model takes the anatomy of the modern horse into account.
