Sweet Iron bits are known for the mild flavor of the mouthpiece. Additionally, the bits have an anatomical shape and come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes.
This double-jointed olive bit features solid stainless steel rings and a mild iron mouthpiece with a blue "sweet iron" coating. The mild iron coating on the mouthpiece stimulates salivation. When this material reacts with moisture, heat, and air through an oxidation process, the surface rust has a sweet taste. This encourages acceptance of the bit. Eventually, the blue color disappears, but the taste of the surface rust remains.
The anatomical design fits the shape of the horse’s mouth, creating a gentle and even pressure distribution. With a double-jointed mouthpiece, the bit consists of three parts, with the middle section lying flat on the tongue. This creates more pressure on the tongue than a single-jointed mouthpiece. The thicker the middle part, the stronger the pressure on the tongue. There are variants where the middle part is equipped, for example, with rings to encourage chewing.
Mouthpiece thickness 14 mm. Rings 65 mm.
An olive bit has rings that cannot rotate freely, giving the rider’s aids a more direct action. This type of bit is generally well accepted because the mouthpiece is relatively fixed in the mouth.
