Which Petrie boot to choose? The complete guide (models, material, size & custom-made)

In short: to choose your Petrie boots, start with your discipline, your budget (from €199 to €1,130), and the material (Calf thinner and more elegant, Cow more robust). Our boots are available custom-made or semi-custom, your choice, based on your measurements: take your measurements with our form, or book a fitting in Orange.

At Sellerie Bucéphale, Petrie boots are one of our specialties. A renowned Dutch manufacturer, Petrie offers custom-made or semi-custom leather boots, from entry-level models to high-end competition boots. This guide helps you choose the right model based on your discipline, body type, and budget.

1. Calfskin or Cowhide: which material?

Almost all high-end Petrie boots come in two types of leather:

Leather Appearance For whom
Calfskin Thinner, supple, elegant, noble patina Aesthetic focus, competitions
Cowhide Thicker, sturdy, durable Intensive use, daily training

On product pages, the "Model" option lets you choose between Cow and Calf — the price varies depending on the leather.

2. Custom-made or semi-custom?

Both options are available, your choice, depending on the level of fit desired:

  • Semi-custom: the shaft is adapted to your calf and height based on an existing model — an excellent fit/price ratio.
  • Custom-made: the boot is built from all your measurements for an optimal fit. Expect a manufacturing time of several weeks.

A stock showing 0 is normal: the boots are made to order, not out of stock.

Which model for your discipline?

A common trap: the word “Polo” in some Petrie model names is a model name, not a discipline indication. These models are actually more suited for dressage or leisure. To choose well, base your choice on your practice rather than the model name.

4. Taking accurate measurements (the key to avoiding size errors)

A Petrie boot is chosen based on many measurements for an optimal fit — this is what prevents exchanges. Two ways to proceed:

  1. You take your own measurements: follow our illustrated guide, then fill out the form.
  2. We take your measurements: by appointment in Orange, at your stables, or at our stand at competitions.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I choose the size of my Petrie boots?

The size is determined from many measurements (shoe size, calf circumference, shaft height, and others) for an optimal fit. Take them with our measurement guide, or come for a fitting. Careful measuring is the best guarantee of a good fit.

What is the difference between Calf and Cow leather?

Calf leather is finer, softer, and elegant, with a noble patina, appreciated for its aesthetics. Cow leather is thicker, robust, and durable, suitable for intensive use and daily training. Both options are offered on most models.

Are Petrie boots made to measure?

Our boots are made to measure or half-measure, your choice, based on your measurements. A stock showing 0 means the boot is made to order — expect several weeks of lead time.

Can I try the boots before ordering?

Yes. We can arrange an appointment in Orange or at your stables, and we attend many competitions. Find out where to meet us.

What budget should I plan for Petrie boots?

From €199 to about €1,130 for a high-end custom competition boot, with a wide mid-range between €350 and €630.

How long do Petrie boots last?

With quality leather and regular maintenance (cleaning, conditioning, zipper care), a well-chosen pair lasts several years.
