A 2.5-ring bit made of mild steel with a blue patina and a French Link double-jointed mouthpiece.
✨ Key features
- ✔ Sweet Iron is mild steel, blued during manufacturing by heating. When exposed to humid air and saliva, it develops a surface oxidation with a sweet taste that naturally stimulates salivation: the horse chews more and accepts the bit better.
- ✔ Double-jointed with a figure-eight-shaped central plate that distributes pressure evenly across the tongue. Its finer edges make the action slightly more incisive than that of an ordinary double-jointed bit, and the plate is angled at 45° to lie flat on the tongue.
- ✔ A gentler version of the three-ring (Pessoa) bit: leverage is present and becomes more direct when the rein is attached lower down. The loose rings allow the bit more movement than a fixed-ring version.

🧴 Usage advice
⚠️ Bit size is given in millimetres: this is the width of the mouthpiece from one ring to the other. A 125 measures 12.5 cm. Measure your horse's mouth with a bit ruler, or use the measurement of the bit it currently wears: too wide, the bit moves around and pinches; too narrow, it tightens the corners of the mouth. ⚠️ Leverage acts on the poll: use it with a light hand and check the cheekpiece adjustment. ⚠️ The blue colour turns silver-grey or brown-grey with use, and an orange film appears when the bit remains unused: this is normal Sweet Iron behaviour, not a defect. A wipe with a damp cloth is enough to remove it. This oxidation is not harmful.
