A loose-ring snaffle made of blue-patina mild steel, with a twisted barrel and locking joint.

✨ Key features

  • ✔ Sweet Iron is mild steel, blued during manufacturing by heating. When exposed to humid air and saliva, it develops a surface oxidation with a sweet taste that naturally stimulates salivation: the horse chews more and accepts the bit better.
  • ✔ A simple twisted joint that locks when it bends: under tension, the barrel acts like a straight barrel, then becomes a simple joint again as soon as the hand gives. The twist adds edges, creating a sharper action.
  • ✔ Two vertical shanks on a fixed ring. These cheeks press against the side of the horse's face and significantly aid steering. The ring is smaller than that of a D-ring snaffle, so the leverage effect is reduced.

📋 Technical specifications

  • Material: Sweet Iron
  • Barrel: twisted with locking joint
  • Barrel thickness: 16 mm

🐎 Why choose this product?

It combines the locking action and the twist: one of the firmest barrels in the range, reserved for horses that run through the hand.

🧴 Usage advice

⚠️ Bit size is given in millimetres: it is the width of the barrel from one ring to the other. A 125 measures 12.5 cm. Measure your horse's mouth with a bit ruler, or measure the bit it wears: if too wide, the bit moves around and pinches; if too narrow, it squeezes the corners of the mouth. ⚠️ High cheeks are attached to the bridle with keepers to prevent them from tipping forward. ⚠️ The blue colour turns silver-grey or brown-grey with use, and an orange film appears when the bit remains unused: this is normal Sweet Iron behaviour, not a defect. A wipe with a damp cloth is enough to remove it. This oxidation is not harmful. ⚠️ Corrective barrel for horses that lean on the bit or run through the hand. Not suitable for sensitive horses or inexperienced riders.

About TRUST Equestrian ...

TRUST Equestrian is a Dutch brand specializing in bits and leatherwork. Its bits are designed, developed, and manufactured in the Netherlands, where a team of technicians assembles them by hand. Production of Sweet Iron mouthpieces began more than fifteen years ago, followed by Leather and then Inno Sense mouthpieces. The range now includes three materials, twenty-two mouthpieces, and thirty-four types of shanks, totaling more than two thousand different bits. TRUST bits are anatomically shaped: slightly curved, they follow the shape of the horse’s mouth. The leather collection is made from European full-grain leather, and each model takes the anatomy of the modern horse into account.
