Preparation and use (10 steps)

Follow this 10-point plan for a professional result.

1. Prepare the shearing area and the animal

  • The shearing area must be well lit and well ventilated.
  • The floor where you shear must be clean, dry, and free of all obstacles.
  • The animal must be dry and as clean as possible. Remove all foreign matter from the coat.
  • The animal must be properly restrained if necessary.
  • Be particularly careful with large, nervous animals. Ask a veterinarian for advice.

2. Choose the right blades

  • Always use Wahl/Lister blades. They feature a patented self-cleaning system that prevents clogging.
  • There is a wide range of blades that leave different hair lengths, as well as special blades for clipping dirty cattle and clearing the hindquarters of sheep.
  • For more information and advice, contact us.

3. Clean the blades

  1. Unplug the clipper before removing the blades.
  2. Carefully remove the blades by unscrewing the tension nut. Make sure not to lose the spring.
  3. Clean the cutting head and blades, even when new: brush between the teeth with the brush provided, then wipe the blades with a dry or oiled cloth.
  • Do not use water or solvent: they would damage the blades.
  • If a foreign object gets between the blades, they may stop cutting. In this case, stop clipping immediately and clean them again.

4. Fit the blades correctly (figure 3)

Fitting the blades on the Wahl Star clipper (figure 3)

  1. Unplug the clipper before fitting the blades.
  2. Turn the clipper over and carefully place the upper blade (cutter) on the cutting head. The crank roller must fit into the notch in the cutter.
  3. Place the lower blade (comb) and insert the tension screw through the central hole.
  4. Place the tension spring on the screw, then screw the tension nut all the way in.

5. Adjust the blade tension correctly (figure 4)

Adjusting the tension of Wahl Star blades (figure 4)

  • Correct blade tension adjustment is essential.
  • Excessive tension dulls the blades and causes overheating.
  • Insufficient tension reduces cutting quality and causes clogging.
  1. ① Screw the tension nut in as far as it will go without forcing it.
  2. ② Using the mark on the tension nut as a guide, loosen it by 1 ½ turns. This is the correct tension.

6. Oil the blades and the cutting head (figure 5)

Wahl Star cutting head oiling points (figure 5)

  • It is essential to oil the moving parts before using the clipper. Insufficient lubrication is a frequent cause of poor results. Oil every 5 to 10 minutes during clipping.
  • Use only Wahl R15 oil, specially formulated for clipping. Other lubricants may irritate the animal’s skin. Aerosol lubricants contain solvents that can damage the blades.
  1. ① Oil between the blade tips. Point the head upward to distribute the oil between the blades.
  2. ② Oil the surfaces between the cutting head and the blade.
  3. ③ Oil the clipper blade guide rail on both sides or through both holes. Tilt the head to the side to distribute the oil.
  4. ④ Oil both sides of the knife heel. Tilt the head to the side to distribute the oil over the rear surfaces of the blades.
  5. ⑤ Oil the crankshaft and the roller through the central hole.

7. Plugging in the appliance

  • Check that the mains voltage corresponds to your clippers.
  • Check that the clippers are switched off before plugging them in.
  • Always unplug the appliance before removing or fitting the blades.

8. Switching on the clippers

  • Run the clippers briefly to distribute the oil. Switch them off and wipe off any excess oil.
  • You can now start clipping.

9. During clipping

  • Oil the blades every 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Brush excess hair off the blades and clippers, as well as off the animal's coat.
  • Tilt the clippers and slide the bevelled cutting edge of the lower blade over the skin. Clip against the direction of hair growth. In difficult areas, stretch the animal's skin flat with your hand.
  • Between passes, keep the blades against the animal's coat, and switch off the clippers when you are not clipping: this prevents the blades from heating up.
  • If a foreign object gets between the blades, they may stop cutting.
  • If the blades no longer cut, do not increase the tension: excessive tension can damage the blades and cause the clippers to overheat. Instead, unplug the appliance, then clean and oil the blades. If they still do not cut, they may need to be resharpened or replaced.
  • If the power cuts out, you may be overloading the clippers. Stop clipping immediately and unplug the appliance. Refer to the Overload protection section before resuming clipping.

10. After clipping

  • Unplug the appliance, then clean the clippers and blades.
  • Store it in a clean, dry place. See Maintenance and storage.

Maintenance and storage

Star clippers

  • Do not carry the clippers by their cable. Regularly check that the cables and connectors are not damaged.
  • Before storing, remove the blades, clean the clippers and oil the moving parts.
  • Store it out of the reach of children, in the case provided or in a clean, dry place.

Clipping head maintenance every 100 hours (figure 6)

Dismantling the Wahl Star clipping head every 100 hours (figure 6)

Every 100 hours of clipping, the clipping head must be dismantled for maintenance:

  1. Unplug the clipper.
  2. Unscrew the clipping head.
  3. Wipe the clipping head and pinion to remove hair and grease.
  4. Check that the pinion teeth are neither worn nor broken.
  5. Coat the pinion with clean R2 grease.
  6. Reattach the clipping head and tighten the screws firmly.

Clipping blades

  • The blades are manufactured in pairs. They must be stored and used in pairs to last longer.
  • Handle them with care. At the slightest impact, the hardened teeth may fracture and the precision cutting face may become marked, which may prevent them from cutting.
  • Clean and oil them with Wahl R15 oil before use, even when new.
  • Always fit and adjust the blades correctly. Do not apply excessive tension.
  • If the clipper remains running when you are not clipping, the blades may overheat and become blunt.
  • Blunt blades can be resharpened by Lister or by a specialist in sharpening clipping blades. Make sure they use a lapping machine, not a grinder.
  • Store them in a clean, dry place, coated with oil or petroleum jelly, or wrapped in an oiled cloth.

Air filter and spare parts

This section reproduces the 2015 Lister Star manual; the 2017 Wahl manual does not detail filter cleaning.

Air filter and reset button of the Star clipper

Left: RESET button (B) at the rear of the motor housing. Right: motor air filter, removed from the side of the clipper.

Air filter

  • Frequently remove the motor's air filter and clean it meticulously (using the supplied brush) so that the motor operates efficiently.
  • To clear the grilles, the ideal solution is a high-pressure air blow gun; otherwise, wash it in a detergent solution and dry it thoroughly.
  • If this maintenance is neglected, the motor may overheat and suffer irreversible damage, or at the very least clip less effectively.

Wear parts for the head and motor

To order a part, specify its part number, description and quantity, and, if possible, the model and serial number shown on the clipper's rating plate.

Part number Description Qty per clipper
258-33961 Filter 1
258-30850 Comb stud 2
258-30850P Comb stud tip 2
252-00009 Tension screw 1
258-10061 Tension spring 1
258-33710 Tension nut 1
258-34330 Spring clip 1
258-33760 Complete cutting head 1

Overload protection (figure 2)

Wahl Star clipper RESET button (figure 2)

  • The Star clipper is equipped with an overload circuit breaker that trips in the event of a problem: blunt or dirty blades, lack of oil, excessive blade tension.
  • The problem must be corrected before resuming clipping:
  1. Unplug the clipper.
  2. Clean and oil the blades.
  3. Look for any obvious sign of a possible cause.
  4. Press the RESET button, located toward the rear of the clipper, to resume clipping.
