Sweet iron eggbutt bit: the sweet taste that encourages chewing.

The eggbutt cheeks are fixed: the mouthpiece does not swivel or pinch the corners of the mouth. The bit stays stable in the horse’s mouth, which reassures young or sensitive horses and makes the contact clearer. The single-jointed mouthpiece acts on the bars and corners of the mouth, with a slight pinching effect on the palate when both reins are used together. It is the most widely used type of bit, one that most horses are already familiar with. The Ergonomic range is designed around the anatomy of the mouth: the mouthpiece tapers inward where space is limited, distributing pressure more evenly. It is made of sweet iron, a mild steel that develops a slightly sweet taste on contact with saliva: the horse chews more, salivates more, and accepts the bit more readily. The double-jointed versions also feature a copper insert, making them even more appealing.

🐎 Why choose this product?

Sweet iron is not merely a catalogue claim: it is a surface designed to oxidize and develop a sweet taste on contact with saliva. A horse that finds its bit pleasant will chew, salivate, and maintain a soft contact. The trade-off is intentional—this metal is softer than stainless steel and develops a patina quickly.

🧴 Care instructions

Rinse with clean water after each use and dry roughly. Do not try to remove the bluish patina or rust spots: they are intentional; this is what gives sweet iron its sweet taste. Do not use abrasive products or a dishwasher. Sweet iron is softer than stainless steel: it marks more quickly, without affecting its use. Check the joints for wear regularly.

Composition

Sweet iron mouthpiece (carbon and manganese steel), stainless steel cheeks.
