Safety Stirrups: How to Choose the Right Ones?

In short: two logics not to be confused. Safety devices — elastic system that breaks, or wide aluminum footbed designed for safety — aim to reduce the risk of the foot getting stuck in case of a fall. Positioning / comfort aids (flexible branch "flex comfort", inclined or wide footbed) improve position and comfort, but are not release mechanisms: their safety effect is limited. In all cases, a safety stirrup reduces the risk of the foot getting stuck, it does not eliminate it. The choice depends on the mechanism, the footbed width (adapted to the boot, with a rim/stop that prevents the foot from slipping through), compatibility with your stirrup leather, and weight.

Among all rider equipment, the stirrup is one of the least talked about… until the day of a fall. The scenario we all fear is the same: the horse bolts, the rider falls, but the foot remains stuck in the stirrup and the rider is dragged. It is precisely this risk that safety stirrups aim to limit. Let's be clear from the start: a safety stirrup reduces the risk of foot blockage, it does not eliminate it. No model replaces good position, appropriate footwear, and adherence to basic safety rules. A good safety stirrup is an extra safeguard, not an absolute guarantee.

Two logics to distinguish: safety vs positioning

Before comparing models, it is important to separate two categories that are often confused — and which are not equal in terms of safety:

  • Safety / release devices — elastic system that breaks, or wide aluminum footbed designed for safety — aim to reduce the risk of the foot getting stuck in case of a fall.
  • Positioning / comfort aids — flexible branch "flex comfort", inclined or widened footbed — improve leg position and comfort, but are not release mechanisms. Their effect on the risk of blockage is limited.

Some models combine a flexible branch and an inclined footbed. Keep in mind, however, that the flexible branch is sold as comfort, not as a release mechanism: for safety, the devices designed for that (elastic system, wide aluminum AERO footbed) take priority.

Remember: whatever the mechanism, a safety stirrup works better when paired with a shoe with a defined heel (boot, boots with mini-chaps) and a non-gripping fit. A flat or very ridged sole that “grips” the footbed works against safety.

Proper sizing: footbed width

This is the most often overlooked point, yet one of the most important. The footbed width (the inner space where the foot rests) must be adapted to the width of your boot at the sole.

  • Too narrow: the foot gets stuck, making it hard to get in and out — the opposite of the desired effect.
  • Too wide: the foot risks slipping completely through the stirrup. Note: this risk mainly depends on the presence (or absence) of a lip / stop that holds the foot, not just the raw width of the footbed.
  • Well fitted: generally allow a little play on each side of the sole, without the foot floating. If in doubt, measure the width of your sole and compare it to the stated inner width of the footbed.

Children and teenagers who grow quickly deserve special attention: a stirrup bought "to last" but too wide can become a trap. It’s better to have a footbed suited to the current shoe size.

Eye, stirrup leather, and weight

Two technical details often forgotten when choosing:

  • Eye / stirrup leather compatibility: check the eye passage width of the stirrup — it must fit your stirrup leather (common width around 20 to 25 mm depending on the saddle). An eye that is too narrow simply prevents mounting.
  • Weight reference: a composite stirrup weighs about 200 g each, an aluminum model is generally heavier, with steel being the heaviest. Lighter = less fatigue; heavier = stirrup that "falls" well under the foot. Choose according to your practice and feeling.

For whom? Child, adult, discipline

The right stirrup also depends on who is using it and for what purpose.

  • Children and beginners: priority is a simple mechanism, a well-sized footbed, and good stability. Composite models, lightweight and sometimes colorful, are often appreciated.
  • Leisure and outdoor riders: comfort, durability, and footbed grip (especially in wet conditions) matter as much as the safety mechanism.
  • Dressage: often a clean aesthetic is sought, an inclined footbed that helps leg positioning, and joint comfort during long sessions.
  • Jumping / cross-country: foot hold on the stirrup, enhanced grip, and durability are priorities — safety in case of a fall is paramount here.

In competition, remember to check what your discipline’s rules allow: certain features (color, material) may be subject to recommendations. When in doubt, refer to the current official FFE or FEI regulations.

Does a safety stirrup guarantee that the foot will never get stuck?

No. It reduces the risk of blockage thanks to its mechanism, but no model eliminates it completely. It complements good position, a shoe with a defined heel, and adherence to safety rules; it does not replace them.

Are safety stirrups allowed in competition?

Is special maintenance required?

For release models, regularly check the condition of the parts that ensure release (rubber rings, straps, joints) and replace them as soon as they show signs of wear. A stuck or worn mechanism no longer functions properly.
