✨ Key features
- ✔ Sweet Iron is mild steel, blued during manufacturing by heating. When exposed to humid air and saliva, it develops a surface oxidation with a sweet taste that naturally stimulates salivation: the horse chews more and accepts the bit better.
- ✔ A single joint. This mouthpiece puts less pressure on the tongue than a double-jointed one and works mainly on the bars and sides of the tongue. This is the standard mouthpiece.
- ✔ Loose rings with two inner half-rings, providing a slight leverage effect. The bridle cheekpiece attaches to the upper half-ring, while the rein attaches to the large ring or lower half-ring.

This is the mouthpiece most horses are familiar with: the one you start with, and return to when you want to determine what comes from the bit and what comes from the rider's hand.
🧴 Usage advice
⚠️ Bit size is given in millimetres: it is the width of the mouthpiece from one ring to the other. A 125 measures 12.5 cm. Measure your horse's mouth with a measuring gauge, or use the measurement of the bit it currently wears: if too wide, the bit moves around and pinches; if too narrow, it squeezes the corners of the mouth. ⚠️ The blue colour changes to silver-grey or brown-grey with use, and an orange coating appears when the bit is left unused: this is normal Sweet Iron behaviour, not a defect. A wipe with a damp cloth is enough to remove it. This oxidation is not harmful.
