Passants are the small leather loops that hold the excess strap length in place. They get lost or break, leaving strips of leather hanging along the horse's cheek.

A bridle with loose strap ends hanging down looks untidy, regardless of the quality of the leather. It is a detail a presentation judge will notice, and it costs only a few cents to fix. Keep two or three in reserve in your tack room.
🧴 Instructions for use
Measure the strap width before ordering: a passant that is too wide will slip, while one that is too narrow will not fit. Place one fixed passant close to the buckle and one sliding passant farther along, so the excess is held at two points. Soften new leather with glycerine soap before fitting it: a dry passant can tear during installation.
