- ✔ Sweet Iron is mild steel that is blued during manufacturing by heating. When exposed to humid air and saliva, it develops a surface oxidation with a sweet taste that naturally stimulates salivation: the horse chews more and accepts the bit more readily.
- ✔ Double-jointed design with an elliptical central link. This shape better follows the anatomy of the mouth and allows the bit to sit more freely, but it applies slightly more pressure to the center of the tongue than a single joint.
- ✔ Loose rings with two inner half-rings, which provide a slight leverage effect. The bridle cheekpiece attaches to the upper half-ring, while the rein attaches to the large ring or the lower half-ring.

The elliptical link eliminates the pinching effect of a single joint without the firmness of a flat plate: this is the most forgiving type of double-jointed bit.
🧴 Care and use advice
⚠️ Bit size is given in millimetres: it is the width of the mouthpiece from one ring to the other. A 125 measures 12.5 cm. Measure your horse's mouth with a bit ruler, or measure the bit it currently wears: if it is too wide, the bit moves around and pinches; if it is too narrow, it tightens the corners of the mouth. ⚠️ The blue colour turns silver-grey or brown-grey with use, and an orange film appears when the bit is left unused: this is normal Sweet Iron behaviour, not a defect. A wipe with a damp cloth is enough to remove it. This oxidation is not harmful.
