CHOPO Muzzle User Manual

Instructions for use - CHOPO Muzzles

1. What the muzzle is used for

  • It is a safety tool for situations where there is a risk of biting: veterinary visits, transport, public places, the presence of strangers or other animals.
  • Always choose a muzzle suited to the dog's size and the properties of the materials.
  • A muzzle does not replace socialization or training. It should only be used when necessary, always in the presence of an adult responsible for the dog.

2. The right size and model

  • Choose a size suited to the shape and dimensions of your dog's muzzle.
  • The dog must be able to breathe and open its mouth comfortably, including to pant and bark.
  • Check the width and length: there must be sufficient space around the eyes for the dog to see freely, with no pressure on the cheekbones and no pressure points.
  • The three internal dimensions of each CHOPO reference are indicated in our CHOPO size guide.

3. Putting it on

  • Put the muzzle on calmly, without stress or force.
  • Adjust the strap so that it is comfortable and securely fastened around the back of the neck, behind the ears, without the dog being able to remove it.

4. Acclimatization and positive reinforcement

  • If your dog is not used to it, proceed gradually and reward each step so that it associates the muzzle with something pleasant.
  • If you are unsure about the method, seek guidance from a professional dog trainer.

5. Care

  • Clean and dry the muzzle regularly to limit dirt and odors.
  • Regularly condition leather straps with a leather-care product to prevent them from drying out and cracking. Biothane straps can simply be rinsed with water.
  • Check for wear and damage; replace the muzzle if necessary. Never use a damaged muzzle.

6. Wearing time

  • The dog must not wear the muzzle continuously, especially if it remains isolated for a long time.
  • Give the dog enough time without the muzzle to behave naturally.

7. Safety and supervision

  • Never without supervision: a muzzle limits the dog's ability to communicate and behave naturally. Always remain present.
  • Avoid prolonged use: not all day. The dog must be able to behave and breathe freely for much of the time.
  • Keep the muzzle in good condition: regularly check the straps and buckles; they must remain securely fastened.
  • Respect the dog's well-being: if it shows anxiety or discomfort, resume gradual acclimatization with positive reinforcement.
  • Training: a muzzle does not replace reliable training. The dog's obedience remains the key to safe coexistence.
  • With certain types of muzzles, a dog that gets caught or tries to remove the muzzle may injure itself: choose the model with safety in mind and always keep the dog on a leash.
  • Safety of others: if your dog is aggressive or bites, the muzzle is prevention, not treatment. Consult a canine behaviorist without delay for training and help choosing the model.

These recommendations will help you use the muzzle safely and comfortably. Every dog is unique: what suits one may not necessarily suit another. Always keep your dog's well-being and safety in mind and adapt to its needs. If you are unsure how to use the muzzle, or if your dog has serious behavioral problems, seek help from a professional dog trainer.
