The Thiedemann training aid works on the principle of a gentle pulley: the rein slides through the bit ring and returns to the girth, encouraging the horse to lower its neck without forcing it — it is an aid, not a restraint. The three half-rings on each side allow the action to be adjusted according to the horse and its stage of training. Flat leather is what you find on quality training aids: it slides better through the rings than round leather.
