Size: the spur length as specified by Sprenger — the shank alone without a rowel, or the shank plus the protruding part of the rowel for the other models.
Length from the boot: from the heel of the boot to the tip of the spur, including the bow and rowel. Value provided by Sprenger.
In competition
Regulations measure the spur from the boot, not the shank alone: the second column is therefore the one that counts. Permitted lengths and rowels depend on the discipline, competition level, federation and country, and they change from one season to the next. Before entering, check the regulations in force for your competition.
The swan-neck shank curves upward before extending backward: the spur remains clear of the horse's side until the leg is applied, allowing the aid to be given without turning the heel.
