The mouthpiece is made of mild steel coated with a blue layer (“sweet iron”). When exposed to moisture, warmth, and air, it develops a surface rust with a sweet taste that stimulates salivation and encourages acceptance of the bit. The blue coating eventually disappears, but the taste of the surface rust remains.
The full-cheek snaffle has two vertical bars—the cheeks—in front of the rings. They press against the cheeks, reinforcing steering aids while preventing the bit from being pulled through the mouth. The horse is easy to steer, which makes this bit suitable for young horses. A full-cheek snaffle can be fitted with keepers, which hold it in place and give it a slight leverage effect.

The mouthpiece of a single-jointed bit pivots at one point: it acts on the tongue, bars, corners of the mouth, and sometimes the palate, forming a V shape when the reins are engaged. With a single point of articulation, the tongue remains freer than with a double-jointed bit.
🧴 Usage instructions
If the bit is left unused for some time, a brown-orange layer of rust may form on the mouthpiece: a damp cloth is enough to remove it. ⚠️ Do not try to remove the surface rust with an abrasive product—it is what gives the bit its desired taste. Measure the width from one ring to the other, with the mouthpiece straight. ⚠️ A bit that is too narrow pinches the corners of the mouth; one that is too wide moves around in the mouth and knocks against the teeth. Allow approximately half a centimetre of visible mouthpiece on each side.
