A 2.5-ring bit made of mild steel with a blue patina and a Dr. Bristol double-jointed mouthpiece.
✨ Key features
- ✔ Sweet Iron is mild steel, blued during manufacturing by heating. When exposed to humid air and saliva, it develops a surface oxidation with a sweet taste that naturally stimulates salivation: the horse chews more and accepts the bit more readily.
- ✔ Double-jointed design with a flat central plate. When the bit tilts, pressure is distributed between the center and the sides of the tongue.
- ✔ A milder version of the three-ring (Pessoa) bit: leverage is present and becomes more direct when the rein is attached lower down. The loose rings allow more movement of the bit than a version with eggbutt rings.
- ✔ More incisive mouthpiece than a standard double-jointed bit: the plate acts edge-on against the tongue.

🧴 Usage advice
⚠️ Bit size is given in millimeters: this is the width of the mouthpiece from one ring to the other. A 125 measures 12.5 cm. Measure your horse's mouth with a bit ruler, or measure the bit it currently wears: if too wide, the bit moves around and pinches; if too narrow, it tightens the corners of the mouth. ⚠️ The leverage acts on the poll: use it with a light hand and check the cheekpiece adjustment. ⚠️ The blue color changes to silver-gray or brown-gray with use, and an orange film appears when the bit is left unused: this is normal Sweet Iron behavior, not a defect. A wipe with a damp cloth is enough to remove it. This oxidation is not harmful.
