A 2.5-ring bit made of blue-patinated sweet iron, with a twisted barrel and locking lozenge.
✨ Key features
- ✔ Sweet Iron is mild steel that is blued during manufacturing by heating. When exposed to humid air and saliva, it develops a surface oxidation with a sweet taste that naturally stimulates salivation: the horse chews more and accepts the bit better.
- ✔ Simple twisted joint that locks when it bends: under tension, the barrel acts like a straight barrel, then becomes a simple joint again as soon as the hand gives. The twist adds edges, resulting in a sharper action.
- ✔ A milder version of the three-ring (Pessoa) bit: leverage is present and becomes more direct the lower the rein is attached. The loose rings allow more movement in the bit than an eggbutt version.

🧴 Usage advice
⚠️ Bit size is given in millimetres: this is the width of the barrel from one ring to the other. A 125 measures 12.5 cm. Measure your horse's mouth with a bit ruler, or use the measurement of the bit it currently wears: if too wide, the bit moves around and pinches; if too narrow, it tightens the corners of the mouth. ⚠️ Leverage acts on the poll: fit it with a light hand and check the cheekpiece adjustment. ⚠️ The blue colour turns silver-grey or brown-grey with use, and an orange film appears when the bit is left unused: this is normal Sweet Iron behaviour, not a defect. A wipe with a damp cloth is enough to remove it. This oxidation is not harmful. ⚠️ A corrective barrel for horses that lean on the reins or run through the hand. Not suitable for sensitive horses or inexperienced riders.
