A loose-ring bit in blue-patinated sweet iron, with a locking jointed mouthpiece.

✨ Key features

  • ✔ Sweet Iron is mild steel, blued during manufacturing by heating. When exposed to humid air and saliva, it develops a sweet-tasting surface oxidation that naturally stimulates salivation: the horse chews more and accepts the bit better.
  • ✔ A single-jointed mouthpiece that locks as soon as it bends: under rein tension, the mouthpiece then acts like a straight mouthpiece, which enhances its action. As soon as the tension eases, it becomes a single-jointed mouthpiece again.
  • ✔ The rings slide freely through the mouthpiece. The hand's action is therefore less direct than with fixed-ring bits: the bit moves, so the horse cannot lean against a fixed point of contact.
  • ✔ Corrective mouthpiece, designed for horses that lean on the hand or run through the bit.

📋 Technical specifications

  • Type: loose-ring bit
  • Material: Sweet Iron
  • Mouthpiece: locking jointed
  • Mouthpiece thicknesses: 12 mm / 16 mm
  • Sizes (mm): 115 / 125 / 135 / 145

🐎 Why choose this product?

It gives you two bits in one: a single-jointed mouthpiece when the hand is light, and a straight mouthpiece as soon as the horse leans on it. The horse discovers for itself that it is better not to pull.

🧴 Usage advice

⚠️ Bit size is given in millimetres: this is the width of the mouthpiece from one ring to the other. A 125 measures 12.5 cm. Measure your horse's mouth with a bit measuring tool, or use the measurement of the bit it wears: too wide, the bit moves around and pinches; too narrow, it tightens the corners of the mouth. Choose the thickness according to the mouth: a thick mouthpiece distributes pressure over a larger surface, but takes up too much room in a shallow mouth or with a thick tongue. ⚠️ Fit rubber bit guards: it is between the moving ring and the mouthpiece that the corner of the mouth gets pinched. ⚠️ The blue colour turns silver-grey or brown-grey with use, and an orange film appears when the bit remains unused: this is normal Sweet Iron behaviour, not a defect. A wipe with a damp cloth is enough to remove it. This oxidation is not harmful.

About TRUST Equestrian ...

TRUST Equestrian is a Dutch brand specializing in bits and leatherwork. Its bits are designed, developed, and manufactured in the Netherlands, where a team of technicians assembles them by hand. Production of Sweet Iron mouthpieces began more than fifteen years ago, followed by Leather and then Inno Sense mouthpieces. The range now includes three materials, twenty-two mouthpieces, and thirty-four types of shanks, totaling more than two thousand different bits. TRUST bits are anatomically shaped: slightly curved, they follow the shape of the horse’s mouth. The leather collection is made from European full-grain leather, and each model takes the anatomy of the modern horse into account.
