A loose-ring bit made of mild steel with a blue patina, featuring a double-jointed mouthpiece with an elliptical center link.

✨ Key features

  • ✔ Sweet Iron is mild steel, blued during manufacturing by heating. When exposed to humid air and saliva, it develops a surface oxidation with a sweet taste that naturally stimulates salivation: the horse chews more and accepts the bit more readily.
  • ✔ Double-jointed mouthpiece with an elliptical center link. This shape conforms better to the anatomy of the mouth and allows the bit to sit more freely, but it applies slightly more pressure to the center of the tongue than a single-jointed mouthpiece.
  • ✔ The rings slide freely through the mouthpiece. The hand's action is therefore less direct than with a fixed-ring bit: the bit moves, so the horse cannot lean against a fixed contact point.

📋 Technical specifications

  • Type: loose-ring bit
  • Material: Sweet Iron
  • Mouthpiece: double-jointed with an elliptical center link
  • Mouthpiece thicknesses: 12 mm / 16 mm
  • Sizes (mm): 115 / 125 / 135 / 145

🐎 Why choose this product?

The elliptical center link eliminates the pinching effect of a single joint without imposing the firmness of a flat plate: it is the most forgiving double-jointed mouthpiece.

🧴 Usage advice

⚠️ Bit size is given in millimeters: it is the width of the mouthpiece from one ring to the other. A 125 measures 12.5 cm. Measure your horse's mouth with a ruler, or use the measurement of the bit it wears: too wide, the bit moves around and pinches; too narrow, it tightens the corners of the mouth. Choose the thickness according to the mouth: a thick mouthpiece distributes pressure over a larger surface, but takes up more room in a shallow mouth or with a thick tongue. ⚠️ Fit rubber bit guards: the corner of the mouth is pinched between the moving ring and the mouthpiece. ⚠️ The blue color changes to silver-gray or brown-gray with use, and an orangey film appears when the bit remains unused: this is normal Sweet Iron behavior, not a defect. A wipe with a damp cloth is enough to remove it. This oxidation is not harmful.

About TRUST Equestrian ...

TRUST Equestrian is a Dutch brand specializing in bits and leatherwork. Its bits are designed, developed, and manufactured in the Netherlands, where a team of technicians assembles them by hand. Production of Sweet Iron mouthpieces began more than fifteen years ago, followed by Leather and then Inno Sense mouthpieces. The range now includes three materials, twenty-two mouthpieces, and thirty-four types of shanks, totaling more than two thousand different bits. TRUST bits are anatomically shaped: slightly curved, they follow the shape of the horse’s mouth. The leather collection is made from European full-grain leather, and each model takes the anatomy of the modern horse into account.
