A 2.5-ring eggbutt bit made of mild steel with a blue patina and a locking-joint mouthpiece.

- ✔ Sweet Iron is mild steel, blued during manufacture by heating. When it comes into contact with humid air and saliva, it develops a surface oxidation with a sweet taste that naturally stimulates salivation: the horse chews more and accepts the bit better.
- ✔ The single joint locks as soon as it bends: under rein tension, the mouthpiece then acts like a straight mouthpiece, which enhances its action. As soon as the tension eases, it becomes a single-jointed mouthpiece again.
- ✔ A milder version of the three-ring (Pessoa) bit: leverage is present and becomes more pronounced when the rein is attached lower down. As the rings are fixed, the bit moves less in the mouth than a 2.5-ring bit with loose rings.
- ✔ Corrective mouthpiece, designed for horses that lean on the hand or run through the contact.

It gives you two bits in one: a single joint when the hand is light, and a straight mouthpiece as soon as the horse leans on it. The horse discovers for itself that not pulling is more comfortable.
🧴 Usage advice
⚠️ Bit size is given in millimetres: this is the width of the mouthpiece from one ring to the other. A 125 measures 12.5 cm. Measure your horse's mouth with a measuring gauge, or use the measurement of the bit it wears: if too wide, the bit moves around and pinches; if too narrow, it tightens the corners of the mouth. ⚠️ Leverage acts on the poll: use it with a light hand and check the cheekpiece adjustment. ⚠️ The blue colour turns silver-grey or brown-grey with use, and an orange film appears when the bit is left unused: this is normal Sweet Iron behaviour, not a defect. A wipe with a damp cloth is enough to remove it. This oxidation is not harmful.
