A 2.5-ring eggbutt bit made of mild steel with a blue patina and a locking-joint mouthpiece.

✨ Key features

  • ✔ Sweet Iron is mild steel, blued during manufacture by heating. When it comes into contact with humid air and saliva, it develops a surface oxidation with a sweet taste that naturally stimulates salivation: the horse chews more and accepts the bit better.
  • ✔ The single joint locks as soon as it bends: under rein tension, the mouthpiece then acts like a straight mouthpiece, which enhances its action. As soon as the tension eases, it becomes a single-jointed mouthpiece again.
  • ✔ A milder version of the three-ring (Pessoa) bit: leverage is present and becomes more pronounced when the rein is attached lower down. As the rings are fixed, the bit moves less in the mouth than a 2.5-ring bit with loose rings.
  • ✔ Corrective mouthpiece, designed for horses that lean on the hand or run through the contact.

🐎 Why choose this product?

It gives you two bits in one: a single joint when the hand is light, and a straight mouthpiece as soon as the horse leans on it. The horse discovers for itself that not pulling is more comfortable.

🧴 Usage advice

⚠️ Bit size is given in millimetres: this is the width of the mouthpiece from one ring to the other. A 125 measures 12.5 cm. Measure your horse's mouth with a measuring gauge, or use the measurement of the bit it wears: if too wide, the bit moves around and pinches; if too narrow, it tightens the corners of the mouth. ⚠️ Leverage acts on the poll: use it with a light hand and check the cheekpiece adjustment. ⚠️ The blue colour turns silver-grey or brown-grey with use, and an orange film appears when the bit is left unused: this is normal Sweet Iron behaviour, not a defect. A wipe with a damp cloth is enough to remove it. This oxidation is not harmful.

About TRUST Equestrian ...

TRUST Equestrian is a Dutch brand specializing in bits and leatherwork. Its bits are designed, developed, and manufactured in the Netherlands, where a team of technicians assembles them by hand. Production of Sweet Iron mouthpieces began more than fifteen years ago, followed by Leather and then Inno Sense mouthpieces. The range now includes three materials, twenty-two mouthpieces, and thirty-four types of shanks, totaling more than two thousand different bits. TRUST bits are anatomically shaped: slightly curved, they follow the shape of the horse’s mouth. The leather collection is made from European full-grain leather, and each model takes the anatomy of the modern horse into account.
