A curved 2.5-ring eggbutt bit made of blue-patinated mild steel, with a curved mouthpiece.

✨ Key features

  • ✔ Sweet Iron is mild steel, blued during manufacture by heating. When exposed to humid air and saliva, it develops a surface oxidation with a sweet taste that naturally stimulates salivation: the horse chews more and accepts the bit more readily.
  • ✔ One-piece, curved, unjointed mouthpiece.
  • ✔ A milder version of the three-ring (Pessoa) bit: it provides leverage, which is more pronounced when the rein is attached lower down. Since the rings are fixed, the bit moves less in the mouth than a 2.5-ring bit with loose rings.

🧴 Usage advice

⚠️ Bit size is given in millimeters: it is the width of the mouthpiece from one ring to the other. A 125 measures 12.5 cm. Measure your horse's mouth with a bit ruler, or use the measurement of the bit it currently wears: if it is too wide, the bit moves around and pinches; if it is too narrow, it presses the corners of the mouth. ⚠️ Leverage acts on the poll: use it with a light hand and check the cheekpiece adjustment. ⚠️ The blue color turns silver-gray or brown-gray with use, and an orange film appears when the bit remains unused: this is normal Sweet Iron behavior, not a defect. A wipe with a damp cloth is enough to remove it. This oxidation is not harmful.

About TRUST Equestrian ...

TRUST Equestrian is a Dutch brand specializing in bits and leatherwork. Its bits are designed, developed, and manufactured in the Netherlands, where a team of technicians assembles them by hand. Production of Sweet Iron mouthpieces began more than fifteen years ago, followed by Leather and then Inno Sense mouthpieces. The range now includes three materials, twenty-two mouthpieces, and thirty-four types of shanks, totaling more than two thousand different bits. TRUST bits are anatomically shaped: slightly curved, they follow the shape of the horse’s mouth. The leather collection is made from European full-grain leather, and each model takes the anatomy of the modern horse into account.
