A 2.5-ring loose-ring snaffle made of blue-patinated mild steel, with a ball-link Waterford barrel.

✨ Key features

  • ✔ Sweet Iron is mild steel, blued during manufacturing by heating. When exposed to humid air and saliva, it develops a surface oxidation with a sweet taste that naturally stimulates salivation: the horse chews more and accepts the bit better.
  • ✔ A succession of articulated elliptical links: the barrel conforms to every shape and provides no fixed point of leverage. Used on heavy horses that lean on the hand and have difficulty relaxing their jaw.
  • ✔ A milder version of the three-ring (Pessoa): leverage is present, and becomes more pronounced the lower the rein is attached. As the rings are fixed, the bit moves less in the mouth than a 2.5-ring bit with loose rings.

📋 Technical specifications

  • Type: 2.5-ring loose-ring snaffle
  • Material: Sweet Iron
  • Barrel: ball-link Waterford
  • Barrel thickness: 16 mm
  • Sizes (mm): 115 / 125 / 135 / 145

🐎 Why choose this product?

No fixed point of leverage: the heavy horse has nothing to lean against. Reserve it for steady hands, as its mobility leaves no room for a moving hand.

🧴 Usage advice

⚠️ Bit size is given in millimetres: this is the width of the barrel from one ring to the other. A 125 measures 12.5 cm. Measure your horse's mouth with a measuring gauge, or use the measurement of the bit it currently wears: too wide, the bit moves around and pinches; too narrow, it tightens the corners of the mouth. ⚠️ Leverage acts on the poll: use it with a light hand and check the cheekpiece adjustment. ⚠️ The blue colour turns silver-grey or brown-grey with use, and an orange film appears when the bit remains unused: this is normal Sweet Iron behaviour, not a defect. A wipe with a damp cloth is enough to remove it. This oxidation is not harmful. ⚠️ Very mobile barrel; reserve for experienced, steady hands.

About TRUST Equestrian ...

TRUST Equestrian is a Dutch brand specializing in bits and leatherwork. Its bits are designed, developed, and manufactured in the Netherlands, where a team of technicians assembles them by hand. Production of Sweet Iron mouthpieces began more than fifteen years ago, followed by Leather and then Inno Sense mouthpieces. The range now includes three materials, twenty-two mouthpieces, and thirty-four types of shanks, totaling more than two thousand different bits. TRUST bits are anatomically shaped: slightly curved, they follow the shape of the horse’s mouth. The leather collection is made from European full-grain leather, and each model takes the anatomy of the modern horse into account.
