✨ Key features
- ✔ Sweet Iron is mild steel, blued during manufacturing by heating. When exposed to humid air and saliva, it develops a surface oxidation with a sweet taste that naturally stimulates salivation: the horse chews more and accepts the bit more readily.
- ✔ Single joint. This mouthpiece puts less pressure on the tongue than a double-jointed mouthpiece and works mainly on the bars and sides of the tongue. This is the standard mouthpiece.
- ✔ Combined-leverage shank: it acts both on the poll, behind the ears, and on the chin. It can be used with one or two reins.

This is the mouthpiece most horses are familiar with: the one to start with, and the one to return to when trying to determine what comes from the bit and what comes from the rider's hand.
🧴 Usage advice
⚠️ Bit size is given in millimetres: it is the width of the mouthpiece from one ring to the other. A 125 measures 12.5 cm. Measure your horse's mouth with a bit ruler, or use the measurement of the bit it wears: too wide, the bit moves around and pinches; too narrow, it tightens the corners of the mouth. ⚠️ With a single rein, a Pelham rounding must be fitted between the large ring and the lower ring. A curb chain is essential. ⚠️ The blue colour turns silver-grey or brown-grey with use, and an orange film appears when the bit is left unused: this is the normal behaviour of Sweet Iron, not a defect. A wipe with a damp cloth is enough to remove it. This oxidation is not harmful.
