A baby Pelham bit made of mild steel with a blue patina, featuring a double-jointed mouthpiece with an elliptical link.

✨ Key features

  • ✔ Sweet Iron is mild steel, blued during manufacturing by heating. When exposed to humid air and saliva, it develops a surface oxidation with a sweet taste that naturally stimulates salivation: the horse chews more and accepts the bit better.
  • ✔ Double-jointed mouthpiece with an elliptical central link. This shape better follows the anatomy of the mouth, allowing the bit to sit more freely, but it applies slightly more pressure to the center of the tongue than a single joint.
  • ✔ Compact Pelham: combined action on the poll and chin, with one or two reins.

📋 Technical specifications

  • Type: baby Pelham bit
  • Material: Sweet Iron
  • Mouthpiece: double-jointed with an elliptical link
  • Mouthpiece thicknesses: 12 mm / 16 mm
  • Sizes (mm): 115 / 125 / 135 / 145

🐎 Why choose this product?

The elliptical link eliminates the pinching effect of a single joint without imposing the firmness of a flat plate: it is the most forgiving type of double-jointed mouthpiece.

🧴 Usage advice

⚠️ Bit size is given in millimetres: this is the width of the mouthpiece from one ring to the other. A 125 measures 12.5 cm. Measure your horse's mouth with a bit ruler, or measure the bit it wears: if it is too wide, the bit moves around and pinches; if it is too narrow, it tightens the corners of the mouth. Choose the thickness according to the mouth: a thick mouthpiece distributes pressure over a larger surface, but takes up too much room in a shallow mouth or with a thick tongue. ⚠️ With a single rein, a connector is required between the large ring and the lower ring. A curb chain is essential. ⚠️ The blue colour turns silver-grey or brown-grey with use, and an orange film appears when the bit is left unused: this is normal Sweet Iron behaviour, not a defect. A wipe with a damp cloth is enough to remove it. This oxidation is not harmful.

About TRUST Equestrian ...

TRUST Equestrian is a Dutch brand specializing in bits and leatherwork. Its bits are designed, developed, and manufactured in the Netherlands, where a team of technicians assembles them by hand. Production of Sweet Iron mouthpieces began more than fifteen years ago, followed by Leather and then Inno Sense mouthpieces. The range now includes three materials, twenty-two mouthpieces, and thirty-four types of shanks, totaling more than two thousand different bits. TRUST bits are anatomically shaped: slightly curved, they follow the shape of the horse’s mouth. The leather collection is made from European full-grain leather, and each model takes the anatomy of the modern horse into account.
