A Pelham bit in mild steel with a blue patina and a twisted barrel with a locking lozenge.
✨ Key features
- ✔ Sweet Iron is mild steel, blued during manufacture by heating. When exposed to humid air and saliva, it develops a surface oxidation with a sweet taste that naturally stimulates salivation: the horse chews more and accepts the bit more readily.
- ✔ Twisted single-jointed mouthpiece that locks when it bends: under tension, the mouthpiece acts like a straight bar, then becomes single-jointed again as soon as the rider softens the contact. The twist adds edges, resulting in a sharper action.
- ✔ Combined leverage shank: it acts both on the poll, behind the ears, and on the chin. It can be used with one or two reins.

🧴 Usage advice
⚠️ Bit size is given in millimetres: this is the width of the mouthpiece from one ring to the other. A 125 measures 12.5 cm. Measure your horse's mouth with a bit ruler, or use the measurement of the bit it wears: if it is too wide, the bit moves around and pinches; if it is too narrow, it squeezes the corners of the mouth. ⚠️ With a single rein, a Pelham rounding is required between the large ring and the lower ring. A curb chain is essential. ⚠️ The blue colour changes to silver-grey or brown-grey with use, and an orange film appears when the bit is left unused: this is normal Sweet Iron behaviour, not a defect. A wipe with a damp cloth is enough to remove it. This oxidation is not harmful. ⚠️ Corrective mouthpiece for horses that lean on the contact or run through it. Not suitable for sensitive horses or inexperienced riders.
