A loose-ring gag bit made of mild steel with a blue patina and a ball Waterford barrel.
✨ Key features
- ✔ Sweet Iron is mild steel, blued during manufacture by heating. When exposed to humid air and saliva, it develops a surface oxidation with a sweet taste that naturally stimulates salivation: the horse chews more and accepts the bit better.
- ✔ A series of articulated elliptical links: the barrel follows every contour and provides no fixed point of leverage. Used on heavy horses that lean on the hand and have difficulty relaxing their jaw.
- ✔ Loose ring fitted with two small rings for the gag cheekpieces. The bit encourages the horse to raise its head. The pressure points are the poll and the corners of the mouth. It can be used with one or two reins, most often two to adjust the effect.
📋 Technical specifications
- Type: loose-ring gag bit
- Material: Sweet Iron
- Barrel: ball Waterford
- Barrel thickness: 16 mm
- Sizes (mm): 115 / 125 / 135 / 145
🐎 Why choose this product?
No fixed pressure point: the heavy horse has nothing to lean against. Reserve it for steady hands, as its mobility leaves no room for a moving hand.
🧴 Instructions for use
⚠️ Bit size is given in millimetres: this is the width of the barrel from one ring to the other. A 125 measures 12.5 cm. Measure your horse's mouth with a bit gauge, or use the measurement of the bit it currently wears: if too wide, the bit moves around and pinches; if too narrow, it squeezes the corners of the mouth. ⚠️ The gag cheekpiece replaces the usual bridle cheekpiece. ⚠️ The blue colour turns silver-grey or brown-grey with use, and an orangey film appears when the bit is left unused: this is normal Sweet Iron behaviour, not a defect. A wipe with a damp cloth is enough to remove it. This oxidation is not harmful. ⚠️ Very mobile barrel; reserve for experienced, steady hands.
