A Verdun bit (D-rings) made of blue-patinated sweet iron, with a Dr. Bristol double-jointed mouthpiece.
✨ Key features
- ✔ Sweet Iron is a mild steel that is blued during manufacture by heating. When exposed to humid air and saliva, it develops a sweet-tasting surface oxidation that naturally stimulates salivation: the horse chews more and accepts the bit better.
- ✔ Double-jointed mouthpiece with a flat central plate. When the bit tilts, pressure is distributed between the center and the sides of the tongue.
- ✔ Two D-shaped rings that do not tilt back and forth: greater stability and more direct action. The D shape increases lateral pressure against the cheek, making steering easier.
- ✔ More incisive mouthpiece than a standard double-jointed bit: the plate acts edge-on against the tongue.

🧴 Usage advice
⚠️ Bit size is given in millimeters: it is the width of the mouthpiece from one ring to the other. A 125 measures 12.5 cm. Measure your horse's mouth with a measuring gauge, or measure the bit it currently wears: if too wide, the bit moves around and pinches; if too narrow, it tightens the corners of the mouth. ⚠️ The blue color turns silver-gray or brown-gray with use, and an orange film appears when the bit remains unused: this is normal Sweet Iron behavior, not a defect. A wipe with a damp cloth is enough to remove it. This oxidation is not harmful.
