The mouthpiece is made of mild steel coated with a blue layer (“sweet iron”). When exposed to moisture, heat, and air, it develops a sweet-tasting surface rust that stimulates salivation and encourages acceptance of the bit. The blue coating eventually disappears, but the taste of the surface rust remains.

The Verdun bit has D-rings that do not rotate freely, so the aids have a more direct action. This type of bit is generally well accepted because the mouthpiece remains relatively stable in the mouth. The D-shape prevents the bit from being pulled through the mouth and provides good guidance, making it suitable for young horses.

  • ✔ Anatomical shape, with pressure distributed evenly
  • ✔ 65 mm solid stainless steel cheeks
  • ✔ Fixed D-rings: stable mouthpiece and more direct aids

🐎 Why choose this product?

With a double-jointed bit, the mouthpiece consists of three parts, and the central section lies flat on the tongue. This creates more pressure on the tongue than a single-jointed bit, but eliminates the V-shaped effect toward the palate.

🧴 Usage advice

If the bit remains unused for some time, a brown-orange layer of rust may form on the mouthpiece; a damp cloth is enough to remove it. ⚠️ Do not try to remove the surface rust with an abrasive product—it is what provides the desired taste. Measure the width from one ring to the other, with the mouthpiece stretched out. ⚠️ A bit that is too narrow pinches the corners of the mouth; one that is too wide moves around in the mouth and knocks against the teeth. Allow approximately half a centimetre of visible mouthpiece on each side.
