Waxed leather with a lightly grained surface: it grips the hand even when damp, where smooth leather would start to slip.
Waxing is more than a surface finish: the wax penetrates the leather and gives it a matte grain that holds the hand. It is the simplest answer to the problem of slipping reins, without resorting to rubber. Five stops on each side complete the reference points, on a narrow 16 mm cut.
