The pressure between the blade and comb is everything: too low, and the clippers pull the hair; too high, and they heat up and wear out in a single season. These screws and their springs hold that pressure. After repeated disassembly, the threads wear and the spring loses its stiffness - the setting no longer holds, and you have to readjust the tension every ten minutes.
